However, these state laws also do not prohibit the sale of slot machines by individual owners.

Most state laws only allow for certain types of slot machines, such as three-reel machines and five-reel machines. Other states allow for machines manufactured before a certain date. Louisiana only allows casino-style gambling on permanently anchored barges, while Indiana and Mississippi only allow slot machines on riverboats.

In addition to the number of slots available, the type of slot machine can affect the amount that a player can win. If a player chooses a three-reel machine, for example, the jackpot will be smaller. Alternatively, a lucky player may win several bonus rounds in a row.
